A RESEARCH ON LAGOS DANFO DRIVERS AND CONDUCTORS
By Onyebuchi Odianjo
So over time, I have decided to carry out an empirical survey on the behavioural pattern of Lagos Danfo bus drivers and their conductors. And I found out that, some of the cantankerous features that they tend to display when they are on the job is a form of act. Let me put it this way; It's just like a child going to school, he/she learns to read and write to be able to communicate to the understanding of the general public, that how it is for them also.
For my readers resident in Lagos, have you noticed that probably 80% of Danfo bus drivers and conductors act alike, talk alike, drive alike and even hang on to the buses in similar forms? Even regulators of the streets known as the ‘Alayes’ who usually collect money/tax from Danfo drivers, they all communicate with them every time they are in transit, thus communicating to the understanding of the public.
Therefore, I have carried out the act of giving as a research mechanism, and I discovered that the subsequent behaviour of these Danfo drivers and conductors after giving them something (probably a gift item) is entirely different from how they tend to portray themselves. This is the reason why I stated earlier that on the job, their behavioural pattern seems similar but after my research, I discovered otherwise. I will be breaking down the research/stories into three parts: 1, 2 and 3.
Remember my article on ‘DO YOU SAY ‘THANK YOU TO THE LAGOS CONDUCTOR?’ Well, these 3 articles are the continuum, but more interesting, insightful and perhaps heart-melting. I titled them ‘MAYBE THANK YOU ISINT ENOUGH, GIVING COULD.’
In summary, because the research was limited to Danfo drivers and conductors in Lagos, thus results cannot be generalised. However, I subjectively believe that the result can apply to all public transporters and passengers.
